Vintage 1950s Barbour International Wax Suit Jacket Green White Label Motorcycle
Vintage Barbour International Wax Oiled Cotton Suit Jacket Green & White Label. Th is is a very rare chance to own a true vintage 1950s Barbour Motorcycle International Suit Jacket. This jacket was made before Barbour gained its Royal Warrants and features the rare and much sought after Green & White label which reads Barbour Suit made only by J. BARBOUR & SONS LTD BEACON WORKS SOUTH SHIELDS. This jacket is in fabulous condition considering it could be over 65 years old. It deserves to be in a museum but is still very wearable. There is some fraying to the lining and a small hole to the right sleeve, it does not go all the way through (I will include a piece of vintage black fabric if you intend fixing it). This is to be expected from a jacket that has been used as a true motorcycle jacket for that long. All the original poppers work as they should, the original zip has also been replaced by them with a stronger YKK one from a modern International, this makes the coat even more usable everyday. The big bonus with this coat is it retains its belt loops, it comes with a genuine Barbour replacement belt from a later model Steve McQueen International. The cuffs have been reinforced as well to prevent fraying. It has the proper long map pocket not the silly short thing as fitted to the modern “Fashion” Barbour’s. Many people myself included believe these older jackets to be the best International Barbour produced. They use the best 8oz Wax Cotton to keep the elements out. In 1951 the International jacket gained its distinctive slanted, left breast pocket allowing the wearer easy access to maps or for a trials time card. In 1953 the International jacket was adopted as the official’uniform’ for the Vincent Owners Club. Vincent was known as the Maker of the World’s Fastest Standard Motorcycle and to mark this tie-up between the two businesses, the International was dyed black. The international range is a more fitted style than Barbours traditional range of wax coats a. Lthough these coats are still designed to be worn with warm clothing underneath Barbour build up to 6” tolerance. I have measured the jacket laid flat. If you need more photos just let me know. It doesn’t get more classic or retro than this, folks. You’re looking at the Barbour International, which has been in production just as you see it here since — get this — 1936! And since what’s old is new again in our Retro is Golden age, the International is now red hot. Look through a book with photographs of the motorcyclists of yore and it’s obvious that the International jacket was de rigueur riding apparel for the serious motorcycle rider. Barbour’s own website has some of the statistics: 97% of the competitors in the 1957 Scottish Trials wore Barbour and they were the official motorcycle police jacket in 14 different countries. And other than WWII, when there were no international motorcycle events, Barbour was worn “by virtually every British international motorcycle team from 1936 until 1977″. How’s that for a pedigree? In September of 1964 Steve McQueen was chosen as a member of the US team for the’International Six Day Trials’, the most challenging motorcycle event in the world. Each member of the team would ride 200 miles per day, competing in a range of endurance and skill based events, through mountains, forests and rocky trails against the best riders the world had to offer. 1964’s event was held behind what was then the Iron Curtain of communism in East Germany. Barbour is also instantly recognizable by its classic signature tartan interior cotton lining, which is also very comfortable. And best of all is the “Made in England” label, along with its gaggle of Royal seals, attesting to Barbour’s official appointments to various Kings and Queens. The International certainly doesn’t replace any of the modern motorcycle jackets with their high-tech fabrics, CE-approved armor, Gore-Tex liners and Nylon zippers. Black/Original Barbour Tartan lining. UK 38 (96cm) Barbour build in up to 6 inches of tolerance. Into their International range so warm clothing can be worn underneath. Across the chest under arm :- 22 inches (55cm) laid flat. Shoulder to shoulder (rear):- 19 inches (48cm) laid flat. Armpit to cuff :- 19 inches (48cm).
