Very rare, this is an embroidered men’s vest, dating from the last 3 decades of the 18th century. The off-white silk is decorated with multi-colored embroidery in a delicate floral and vine design at the edges and pocket flaps, with smaller vine, or twig, and floral designs throughout the body of the vest. The buttons are embroidered, the purple threads in a starburst design. It’s lined with linen inside, the back covered with off white silk. There is an interesting eyelet lacing detail at the back, with twill tapes towards the bottom edge to adjust. It’s about 18″ across at the chest, 24″ long in back. There is one hole in front, about 1/18 in diameter, four light spots in the same area, (last pic), a few other, very light spots here and there, to the embroidered silk. There is some wear to the silk at the right underarm. There are 7-8 horizontal splits to the back outer layer of silk, these are all in the lower half of the vest, including a 6 tear almost to the bottom edge, at the right side. There are 2 narrow, vertical bands of silk at the edge of the silk backing, one has a separation with a bit of fraying. There are a few other, smaller stressed areas just starting to split near the underarm. The linen lining is very good, with a 1/2″ x 1/8″ hole, and a 1/8″ hole in the same area, plus a 1″ x 2 area of light discoloration. Most of these I have tried to show in the photos. The embroidery has very little loss that I can see. 1770’s – 1780’s. The item “18TH CENTURY EMBROIDERED VEST, LINEN LINING, LACING DETAIL” is in sale since Friday, August 23, 2019.
