Antique 19th Century Hand Embroidered Waistcoat Mens Vest Embroidery
A wonderful, if not a little bit tired example of an early Victorian shawl collar waistcoat. This style of waistcoat was in vogue from the late 1840s to mid 1850s when vibrant waistcoat vests were all the rage. The entire surface wrought with hand embroidered yellow and red silk rosebuds in tent stitch. Having 6 button holes, and just 4 remaining original metal embossed removable buttons with original brass back hoops. Each metal button impressed to the rear with EXTRA QUALITY. There is a tan colored cotton twill lining and dark brown glazed cotton/Silesia twill back to the waistcoat, all original. There are two large tabs at the back worked with three pairs of hand worked metal eyelets to draw the waist in if required with cords (now missing). The interior leather facings reinforcing the base of each front are absolutely characteristic of the latter half of the 1840s and the first half of the 1850s, and are a fantastic find. Old museum cotton label to interior OT/708. Size: When laid flat: 10 1/2 inch across shoulders, 18 1/2 inch across chest, reducing to 17 inch across waist, from the top of the collar to the longest point in front 21 inch, from underarms to base of hem 8 1/2 inch. Victorians were generally much smaller than today’s modern torso. All images taken in natural English daylight. Condition: Strong and wearable but not perfect. There are some areas of rubbed wear to the edges of the velvet to expose the ground. The blue cord edge to one side of the collar is missing. One insect hole to the top left corner of collar. Slackening to the buttonholes through years of buttoning and unbuttoning. A white mark to the back cotton fabric. A few holes to the leather interior facings. A few loose threads. A lovely genuine 1840s item of clothing in a DELICIOUS rare colorway to add to your collection.
