ANTIQUE MENS OVERCOAT, TROUSERS WITH WAISTCOAT VEST, EARLY 1900s. Early1900s beautifully made black wool mens over coat with matching black wool trousers and waistcoat vest. Overcoat has a small lapel and collar, with three front closure black silk covered metal buttons, two buttons at the back above vent and one smaller button at either cuff. The overcoat has a back vent the length of the lower coat, and is fully lined black cotton in the body, and a black stripped on white background satin in the sleeves. Two inner pockets with no outer pockets. The black wool waistcoat vest has six fabric covered metal buttons and the back is black silk satin with adjustable belt at the back. Has four outer side pockets. The vest has a white striped cotton lining. The pants have a tapered leg, flat panel front, button fly, no belt loops, two front pockets, two back pockets, and buttons for suspenders. Coat and lining is in good condition, but has wear and a rip on one inside armpit lining. Silk have partially or completely shredded off the metal buttons on front closure and back buttons. Few scattered pin holes. Waistcoat vest is in good condition but has a oxidation spots in the back cotton lining as shown in photo. Silk have partially or completely shredded off the metal buttons on front closure. Trousers are in very good condition, no damage. Structurally excellent, and the wool seems to be in immaculate condition for its age. Could use a refresh from decades of attic storage. PROVENANCE Clothing from the estate of William Insco Buchanan (September 10, 1853 to October 17, 1909) who was an American diplomat. On January 26, 1894, President Grover Cleveland the former mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York appointed Buchanan United States Minister to Argentina. Buchanan was chosen by John G. Milburn, president of the exposition, as the exposition was planned with a Latin American theme and they wanted someone who knew the South American countries well. Buchanan was Director General of the Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo, New York from May 1 through November 2, 1901, and is credited with the construction, operation, and dismantling of the exposition.
